New Media Age - Mobile interactivity is to be used as an integral campaigning tool throughout the year-long Make Poverty History campaign, which involves a coalition of 200 organisations lobbying the Government to tackle global poverty. The initial phase of the campaign - supported by mobile technology firm Flytxt and all the UK mobile operators - saw 6,000 people send text messages to Tony Blair last week.Building on that, the next phase of the SMS campaign will take place on 2 July at a Make Poverty History rally in Scotland, a week before the G8 summit at Gleneagles. "We're targeting large public events with an easy-to-use response mechanism," said Martin Gill, new media manager at Comic Relief, one of the leading charities involved. Last week's texting campaign came after a call to action before Nelson Mandela's speech in Trafalgar Square (pictured), ahead of the G7 finance minister's meeting in London. Mobile users who texted 'Make poverty history' to a shortcode at the event received a reply directing them to the Web site for further information. www.makepovertyhistory.org © Copyright Flytxt Ltd 2006.
